SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – The Sulaimani Security Agency (Asayish) has arrested Derin Ahmed, widely known as Kwekha Derin Ozeri, a former senior Peshmerga commander of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), upon his return from the United Kingdom. Despite facing serious allegations including extortion and illegal asset acquisition, Zoom News has learned that Ozeri is set to be released on bail.
In February 2024, PUK-affiliated media reported that a legal case had been opened against Ozeri under Article 405 of the Iraqi Penal Code. He was accused of extorting a Sulaimani businessman and illegally accumulating wealth. At the time, the Asayish demolished his properties near the city, with wide media coverage portraying him as a corrupt figure within the party’s ranks.

However, a political and social settlement is in progress. Zoom News has learned that during a recent meeting at the residence of PUK veteran Kosrat Rasul, participants discussed an agreement that would see the businessman withdraw from his complaint. The reported deal includes Ozeri’s brief detention followed by his release on bail.
Ozeri, who once commanded a special PUK unit loyal to Kosrat Rasul, was a divisive figure within the party. At the time, his case ignited internal tensions, particularly between Shalaw Kosrat Rasul and PUK President Bafel Talabani.
His expected release, orchestrated through political channels, has drawn criticism and raised concerns about the weakening of judicial independence in the Kurdistan Region. The move has prompted renewed debate about the rule of law and the extent of political interference in legal processes.
