SULAIMANI, Kuridstan Region – Baghdad and Erbil have reached an agreement to resume oil exports from the Kurdistan Region, following discussions between the Federal Ministry of Oil and the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Natural Resources.
In a statement, the KRG Ministy of Natural Resources announced a joint technical team has been formed to inspect and assess the Kurdistan Region oil export pipelines.
Oil exports from the Region were halted in March 2023 after a ruling by the International Chamber of Commerce ordered Turkey to stop the flow of Kurdistan’s crude through the Iraq-Turkey pipeline.
Since then, Baghdad and Erbil have struggled to reach a lasting deal, with disputes over revenue sharing and KRG’s independent oil contracts delaying the process.
The agreement comes amid ongoing negotiations over the implementation of the Federal General Budget Law, which stipulates that the KRG must deliver 400,000 barrels per day to Baghdad in exchange for its share of the national budget and salary payments of its civil servants.
