Kurdistan Region President meets with Speaker of Iran’s Parliament

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani held an official meeting with Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, during his visit to Tehran.

In the meeting, both parties emphasized the significance of enhancing the relations between Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the Islamic Republic of Iran, “based on the principles of good neighborliness and shared interests,” as stated by the KRI Presidency.

“They explored various opportunities and strategies to enhance cooperation and strengthen ties across all sectors.”

According to the statement from the Presidency, Iran has agreed to collaborate with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in various areas, including trade, economy, investment, agriculture, tourism, culture, education, and many more.

Additionally, the meeting also afforded an opportunity to deliberate on the overall situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, along with the ongoing relations between Erbil and Baghdad, as per the statement.

President Barzani’s visit to Iran aligns with efforts to delay the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region. During separate meetings on Monday, he also conferred with Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi.

Iraqi media outlets reported that one of the primary purposes of Barzani’s visit is discussing the postponement of the parliamentary elections.
