Iraqi forces deploy along Iraq-Iran border in Kurdistan Region for security

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – Iraqi Border Forces, in cooperation with Peshmerga units, have begun deploying along the Iraq-Iran border in Kurdistan Region’s Erbil province. The mission is to prevent armed groups within the Region from using its territory to attack neighboring countries, particularly Iran.

This deployment follows a security agreement between Iraq and Iran, with a deadline of September 19 to disarm Kurdish opposition parties operating in the Kurdistan Region. Iran has perceived these groups as a threat to its security.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani confirmed last week that the Region is committed to the agreement and will not allow armed groups to use its territory as a base for cross-border attacks.

The presence of Iraqi Border Forces, backed by Peshmerga, aims to strengthen border security, deter potential aggression, and prevent unauthorized activities along the border.
