KDP congress reelects Massoud Barzani as party president

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – After 12 years, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) held its 14th congress in Duhok on Thursday, reelecting Massoud Barzani as the party’s president.

Following his re-election as party president, Barzani proposed Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani to be re-elected as the party’s deputy.

Nechirvan Barzani then gave a speech, proposing Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Masrour Barzani to be appointed deputy of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) president. Masrour Barzani was then elected as the party’s second deputy.

With 1,020 members and representatives participating in the congress, the election of the KDP leadership members begins Friday.

The KDP media reports that all members of the party’s leadership and political bureau are on the list prepared by party president Massoud Barzani. The members of the congress will elect 40 out of 180 people who have been nominated to serve as members of the leadership council of the KDP.

Founded in 1946 in Mahabad in Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhelat), KDP is the largest party in Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

A great deal of power is held by the party in the Region, including the presidency of the KRI, prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, head of the KRI Judicial Council, and many other key ministerial positions.
