Al-Shobaki, from the Gaza Strip, was arrested in 2006 and sentenced to 17 years in prison on charges of allegedly attempting to smuggle weapons into the strip.

Al-Shobaki, who held the rank of Major-General in the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority, has suffered from cancer for a while.

He contracted the coronavirus back in Jan. 2021 and was in critical health condition for some time.

Palestinian figures show that there are 4,780 Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails, including 160 children and 29 female detainees.
