BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Sunday that Tehran is “fully prepared” for any state of war but remains committed to pursuing peace, especially in the conflict-ridden regions of Gaza and Lebanon. Speaking at a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein during an official visit to Baghdad, Araghchi emphasized that while Iran does not seek war, it is ready to respond if necessary.
“We are fully prepared for a state of war. We do not fear war, but we do not want it. We want peace, and we will work to achieve a just peace in Gaza and Lebanon,” Araghchi declared. He commended the Iraqi government for its stance against the use of Iraqi airspace for any hostile actions against Iran, calling Iraq’s position “firm.”
The comments come amid heightened regional tensions following a recent Iranian missile strike on Israel, with Israel preparing for potential retaliation. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein expressed Baghdad’s opposition to any escalation that could involve Iran, stressing that regional stability remains a priority.
“The continuation of the war and its expansion towards the Islamic Republic of Iran and [Israel’s] exploitation of Iraqi airspace as a corridor is completely unacceptable and rejected,” Hussein stated.
The statements by both diplomats underscore the fragile state of affairs in the region, with Iraq seeking to prevent further conflict while Iran signals readiness to defend its interests. The situation remains tense as international efforts to de-escalate the hostilities continue.
