SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – Lahur Sheikh Jangi, a prominent Kurdish political figure, has been in the United States for several days engaging in discussions on the evolving situations in Syria and Iraq. His visit, which includes meetings with influential research centers and key policymakers, aims to garner support for Western Kurdistan (Rojava) and advocate for the continued presence of US troops in both Syria and Iraq.
Jangi’s discussions highlight concerns over potential risks to regional stability, particularly the threats posed by Turkey and its allied groups to Kobani and the broader region of Western Kurdistan. Zoom News has learned he is actively lobbying US political figures and research centers to persuade American decision-makers to maintain their military presence, emphasizing its critical role in supporting the Kurdish administration in northeastern Syria during this crucial period.
Another significant topic under discussion is the potential withdrawal of US forces from Western Kurdistan and Iraq. Jangi warns that such a move would create a security vacuum, potentially facilitating the resurgence of extremist groups like ISIS and undermining regional security.
Despite ongoing US support for Rojava, Turkey has consistently strengthened its position, especially following the rise of ISIS. Turkish officials have conveyed to the US that they have kept Iran and Russia out of Syria, asserting their right to intervene in Syria’s internal affairs. Through NATO and its allies, Turkey is attempting to pressure the US into choosing between supporting Turkey or the Kurdish forces in Rojava.
Jangi’s visit follows his recent meetings with Iraqi political figures, including Nouri al-Maliki, and his official invitation to Bahrain, where he met with several political and security leaders from the US and Europe. In his meetings, Jangi has repeatedly urged Turkey to reconsider its stance on Rojava, stressing the importance of the Kurdish forces’ contributions in the fight against ISIS and other armed groups.
