SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – Farhad Shami, spokesperson for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), cautioned that the Kurdistan Region must recognize its vulnerability to Turkish aggression, highlighting Ankara’s intent to expand its military actions in the region.
Speaking to Zoom News’ Jihad Nabo, Shami outlined Turkey’s plans to invade Kobani, emphasizing that such an invasion poses broader risks for the region, including potential threats to Amed (Diyarbakir), Erbil, and Mahabad. “The protection of Kobani and Rojava (northeastern Syria) safeguards all four parts of Kurdistan,” Shami stressed.
He noted that while the United States and its allies oppose Turkey’s plans, the Kurdistan Region’s official response has been limited to emotional statements rather than decisive political or military actions.

Shami also confirmed ongoing negotiations between the SDF and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). “The Syrian Liberation Council’s response has been positive so far,” he said, adding that an agreement will be announced once discussions conclude.
Addressing the resurgence of ISIS, Shami warned of the group’s increasing access to weaponry from the Syrian regime and its attempts to free detainees from camps and prisons in Rojava. He underscored the urgency of addressing this growing threat.
The SDF’s statements reflect the precarious security situation in northeastern Syria and the region and the potential implications of Turkish military operations for all parts of Kurdistan.
