SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — A high-level Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) delegation is in Baghdad seeking solutions for unpaid civil servant salaries and a December salary deficit, according to the KRG Ministry of Finance.
Hunar Jamal, spokesperson for the ministry, confirmed that Finance Minister Awat Sheikh Janab is meeting with Iraq’s Finance Minister Taif Sami to address the financial shortfall. The delegation is requesting an additional 220 billion Iraqi dinars to cover December’s deficit and discussing amendments to the budget law and the Kurdistan Region’s share of the 2025 budget.
Baghdad has already transferred 761 billion dinars for October salaries and 430 billion dinars to cover part of the October and November deficits. However, civil servants and security personnel remain unpaid for the past two months, prompting strikes across public institutions in Sulaimani.
The ongoing salary crisis, part of a decade-long financial struggle, continues to strain livelihoods and amplify public frustration in the Kurdistan Region.
