SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — The ongoing conflict in Syria has intensified, with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi reporting heavy attacks from multiple fronts.
The SDF, which has been defending Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo, continues to resist the assault despite mounting pressure.
Abdi highlighted that following the collapse and withdrawal of the Syrian army and its allies, SDF forces stepped in to open a vital humanitarian corridor connecting eastern areas of Aleppo and Tell Rifaat.
In a post on X, Abdi says the corridor was established to shield civilians from the threat of genocide. However, efforts to secure safe passage have been hindered by attacks from armed groups backed by Turkey, who have blocked the route.
The rebels on Saturday seized most of Aleppo, along with its airport and dozens of nearby towns, the war monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
And as of Sunday, the jihadist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group and allied factions controlled Aleppo city, except the neighbourhoods controlled by the Kurdish forces.
The United States and its allies France, Germany and Britain called Sunday for “de-escalation” in Syria and urged in a joint statement for the protection of civilians and infrastructure.
“The current escalation only underscores the urgent need for a Syrian-led political solution to the conflict, in line with UNSCR 2254,” read a statement issued by the US State Department, referencing the 2015 UN resolution that endorsed a peace process in Syria.
