BAGHDAD, Iraq — Shiite factions in Iraq’s Parliament held a funeral ceremony Monday for the late Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the Iraqi Islamic Resistance in its fight against Israel. They emphasized that the killing of their leaders would not deter their mission.
The event drew numerous parliament members and leaders closely aligned with Iran. Despite holding official roles, they openly identified as part of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq. Mahdi Taqi Amrly, an MP from the Security and Defense Committee, told Zoom News that Israeli and US attacks on the Resistance would not shake their resolve, vowing to continue the struggle.
Mourners at the ceremony carried banners reading “All of Iraq is with you” and “God is your supporter, oppression will not endure,” calling for an end to the ongoing war and expressing solidarity with Lebanon and Gaza.
The Islamic Resistance frequently launches drone strikes on Israel from Iraqi soil, though the Iraqi government publicly denies involvement.
However, Iraqi MP Mukhtar Mwsawi confirmed that the government is aware of these operations, despite the lack of official acknowledgment, and noted that some factions fight Israel under the Iraqi government’s banner.
Following Nasrallah’s death in an Israeli airstrike on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Beirut last Friday, Iraq declared three days of mourning, with some provinces observing an official holiday.
The Islamic Resistance has announced it remains resolute in avenging Nasrallah and other leaders aligned with Iran. Shiite factions in Parliament continue to support these efforts, raising concerns about the risk of further entangling Iraq in the broader conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza.
