ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in the Kurdistan Region on Thursday, marking the first official visit by an Iranian president to the region. Pezeshkian was welcomed in Erbil by Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.
During his visit, President Pezeshkian held separate meetings with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani. He also met with representatives of various political parties, as well as religious and ethnic communities in the region.
Following the meetings, President Pezeshkian and Nechirvan Barzani spoke exclusively to the official Iranian channel. Barzani described the visit as historic, noting Iran’s support for the Kurdistan Region during challenging times.
President Pezeshkian emphasized the visit’s aim to strengthen ties with Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and Erbil, and to address ongoing issues in their relationship.
Following his visit to Erbil, Pezeshkian traveled to Sulaimani, where he was received solely by the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and senior political leaders of the party. No administrative figures from the city were present at the airport.
