SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — A massive fire has ravaged approximately 200 dunams of forestland on Goizha Mountain in Sulaimani, burning through hundreds of trees and causing significant damage.
The blaze erupted around 3:00 a.m. local time and persisted through the morning, according to reports from Sulaimani’s Forest Police.
The fire, fueled by strong winds, targeted mainly pine and oak trees.
Hemin Kamarkhan, spokesperson for the Forest Police, confirmed to Zoom News that the fire has devastated 200 dunams of forest. The strong winds exacerbated the spread of the flames, complicating efforts to control the blaze.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with authorities working to determine the factors that led to the outbreak. Firefighting teams and local volunteers managed to extinguish the flames after approximately four hours of intense efforts.
The area affected by the fire includes trees planted in 2019, following a previous large-scale fire that had swept through the forest.
