SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has scheduled October 20 for the parliamentary elections. Dilshad Shahab, spokesman for the Region’s Presidency, announced the decree during a press conference on Wednesday.
Shahab stated that the Presidency had consulted with all political parties to determine the date, though not everyone agreed on the timing. Despite some differences, there were no major points of disagreement that could prevent the elections from proceeding.
On Sunday, a senior source in the Kurdistan Region’s Presidency indicated that the president would issue a fifth decree this week.
Following the announcement of the new election date, a source within the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) confirmed to Zoom that the commission is ready to conduct the elections on the scheduled date.
Additionally, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Peshawa Hawramani, announced that the Council of Ministers has unanimously welcomed the scheduled date for the elections.
The scheduling of the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections has been a contentious issue among the region’s political parties, especially the ruling parties. This contention has led to multiple postponements by the KRI Presidency.
With the new date set, the Kurdistan Region is preparing for a significant political event that could shape the future of its governance.
