SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani urged for swift action in implementing measures to digitalize the payment system for civil servants in the Kurdistan Region through Iraqi federal banks, as stated by the Prime Minister’s Media Office.
Prime Minister Sudani chaired a meeting to review progress in digitalizing salary payments for Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) civil servants. The session emphasized adherence to Federal Court directives regarding KRG public employees, highlighting ongoing efforts for efficient implementation.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to comply with a February ruling by the Iraqi Federal Court. The ruling mandates the digitalization and modernization of salary distribution for civil servants in the Kurdistan Region, to be carried out directly through Iraqi federal banks.
The statement clarified that the Prime Minister also investigated the implementation and progress of procedures related to the digitization process, particularly regarding coordination with the Central Bank of Iraq and government-owned banks.
“Prime Minister al-Sudani emphasized the need to expedite the completion of employee data registration in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and to avoid any delays in depositing their salaries,” reads the statement.
Civil servants in the Kurdistan Region have endured months of unpaid salaries over the past decade, attributed to financial challenges claimed by the KRG. The situation escalated dramatically after the halt of the Region’s oil exports last year, exacerbating the crisis. Thousands of teachers and civil servants subsequently protested, demanding their monthly wages.
