SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized the importance of inclusive parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region. He emphasized the participation of diverse Iraqi national components during a meeting with Omar Ahmed Mohammed, the Chairman of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).
The Kurdistan parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place on June 10.
The meeting convened to discuss the latest and most advanced preparations for conducting these upcoming elections, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office.
During the meeting, Sudani emphasized the importance of holding the elections with political consensus and ensuring the participation of the various national components and minorities of the Kurdistan Region.
The Iraqi Prime Minister also underscored the principle of fairness and equality in executing the electoral process of the Kurdistan Region.
Earlier on Tuesday, KRG’s Minister of Minorities Affairs, Aydin Marouf, expressed hope to reinstate the minorities quota system for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections following a visit by KRI President Nechirvan Barzani to Baghdad. Marouf also criticized the Federal Court’s decision to eliminate the quota seats, labelling it as a politically biased decision.
On February 21, a ruling by the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq caused uproar in the Kurdistan Region by reducing the parliamentary seats from 111 to 100, eliminating the quota seats designated for minorities.
