SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — Soma Pourmohammadi, a Kurdish language teacher in Sanandaj, located in Iran’s Kurdistan province, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison on suspicions of “organizing groups aimed at disrupting the country’s stability,” reports Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
Pourmohammadi, aged 35, is an advocate for the teaching of the Kurdish language in Eastern Kurdistan (Iranian Kurdistan). She has been actively involved with the Nozhin Social and Cultural Association.
However, she has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by the Sanandaj court in Iran’s Kurdistan province.
Three additional members of the Association, Zara Mohammedi and Saywan Ibrahimi, along with Idrees Mimbari, have previously been arrested and sentenced to 10, 12, and 10 years in prison, respectively.
They have all been accused of attempting to disrupt the security and stability of the country.
According to the Iranian Constitution, education in the native language is permitted for all ethnic groups within Iran’s schools. However, various organizations contend that the government has failed to uphold this constitutional provision and has actively hindered its implementation.
