SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region — The deadline for submitting political parties’ candidates lists for the upcoming Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections has expired, according to Jumana al-Ghalai, spokesperson for the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), speaking to Zoom News.
She further stated that the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the main ruling party in the Region, has not submitted its list of candidates, aligning with its earlier decision to abstain from what it deems an “unconstitutional” election.
Ghalai asserted that, in accordance with the electoral commission’s regulations, there is no further opportunity to extend the submission period.
Thus far, two coalitions and ten political parties have put forth the names of their candidates, alongside 54 independent candidates, Ghalai added.
She also declared they will be conducting a lottery on April 6th to assign numbers to the registered political parties and candidates, and they will make all preparations for the electoral process.
