SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtas, who is imprisoned in Turkey, and Salih Muslim, the co-chair of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), expressed their skepticism about the explosion that hit Istanbul on Sunday, killing 6 and injuring more than 80 people.
Muslim sees the Istanbul attack as “an anti-Kurdish move” and claims that those arrested have links to groups such as the Free Syrian Army (FSA).
Demirtas published an article Wednesday in which he expressed concerns over the explosion, saying that “if the suspected woman was not supported within Turkey, she could not have carried it out.”
Demirtas posed 11 questions to the Turkish government in an article published on Wednesday, saying that the attack could not be analyzed “without considering its connection to the 2023 presidential elections in Turkey.”
Kurdish political prisoners asked Turkey “why its interior minister, Suleyman Soylu, had immediately blamed Rojava (northeastern Syria) for the attack when he was visiting Syria’s Idlib province when the explosion happened?”
“Do you want to set up a foundation to launch another operation in Rojava ahead of the 2023 elections?” Demirtas asked.
Demirtas also claims that the identity of the alleged attacker remains unclear, as it isn’t clear for whom she carried out the attack.
He adds that “only an independent judiciary and unbiased prosecutors can answer these questions, but if such institutions are present in Turkey.”
“In order to expose the parties who are pursuing political goals through this massacre, everyone must know the truth,” added Demirtas.
