SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – At least 14 people were killed early Wednesday in air strikes on an Iraqi fuel tanker convoy in Al-Bukamal, a Syrian-Iraqi border town in eastern Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province
According to Iraqi media outlets, the strike targeted 23 fuel tankers, resulting in two of them blowing up, killing at least 14.
Syria’s Observatory for Human Rights reported that the majority of the dead were pro-Iranian militias and several Iraqi border guards.
As of yet, it is unclear who was behind the strikes. The U.S. military, along with Israel, has carried out similar strikes in the past, but said it was not involved in the attack. There was no comment from the Israeli army regarding the incident.
The Syrian Observatory also confirmed five coalition airstrikes on Iranian militia sites in Deir ez-Zor since August, which led to the deaths of 11 militiamen and material losses at the sites.
