SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has launched its fifth congress in Sulaimani, gathering Iraqi and Kurdish political leaders and 600 members for a three-day event dedicated to shaping the party’s future and addressing regional challenges.
In his opening address, Bafel Talabani, PUK’s Leader, stressed unity and collaboration, calling on Iraqi and Kurdish officials to strengthen bonds with Baghdad counterparts, emphasizing the importance of a united front in safeguarding Kurdish interests.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, speaking at the PUK’s fifth congress, echoed the call for unity and cooperation. He emphasized the necessity for regional political parties to work together to address challenges and find solutions, safeguarding Kurdish identity.
President Barzani expressed concern about the slow implementation of the Iraqi budget bill, impacting Kurdistan Region residents. He urged the Iraqi government to address these issues in accordance with the constitution, emphasizing the need to depoliticize the welfare and salaries of Kurdish citizens.
The PUK’s fifth congress marks a critical moment in the party’s history as it navigates complex issues within the party.
Over the next three days, congress delegates will engage in discussions and strategic planning, aligning the party’s vision with the evolving needs its interests.
During the first day of the congress, Bafel Talabani unanimously re-elected as President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) by the members.
